Recruitment
HYSF recruits Scholars from Hartford 6th and 7th grade classes. Prospective Scholars and parents must attend a Family Information Meeting before submitting the 8-page Steppingstone Academy application. All students who submit a complete application are invited to sit for a Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT). This test is required for entry into most independent schools, and provides additional admissions data as well as a baseline SSAT score from which we can track future test scores. We admit Scholars who demonstrate:
Academic success - students have tremendous potential
Access Need - without HYSF the student would not have the access to independent schools
Financial Need - families must demonstrate a financial barrier to paying the full cost of independent school
Two staff members read each application package, and then the team selects candidates to interview. Two staff members interview each family, and again, HYSF Staff discuss the candidates. By mid-May, we select the final class of Scholars. This process allows for an array of input and perspectives on each candidate.
