Nominate a Student

What is a nomination?

A nomination is The Steppingstone Academy Hartford’s way of identifying motivated students with the help of teachers, principals, and community leaders. Although we visit numerous schools and share information about our programs with the community in many ways, many talented students still do not hear about us. Through your direct work with students and families, you can help us recognize students with potential.
Nominated students will receive a Steppingstone Academy Hartford information packet and an invitation to one of our Family Information Meetings. Additionally, nominees will receive an application for admission and details on how to apply. An application to The Steppingstone Academy Hartford includes a family and student questionnaire, student essays, teacher recommendations, school transcripts, and participation in the Steppingstone Academy Hartford exam.

Who should you nominate?

As a teacher, principal, or community leader, you should nominate the students who you believe could truly benefit from an intensive academic program such as The Steppingstone Academy Hartford. Nominees must be Hartford residents who are currently in 6th or 7thgrade. The Steppingstone Academy Hartford evaluates its applicants based on criteria such as:
Writing Skills, Oral Communication, Reading Comprehension, Critical Thinking, Study/Organizational Skills

  • Motivation and Academic Potential: We look for hard-working students who will put in the extra effort it takes to succeed not only at The Steppingstone Academy Hartford, but also at partner independent schools. Generally, our Scholars earn A’s and B’s (though this should not be the sole guideline in nominating), demonstrate positive effort, and participate in their school and community. Steppingstone Academy Hartford Scholars are eager to learn, enjoy being academically challenged, and have college as a goal.
  • Access: The Steppingstone Academy Hartford provides students access to educational opportunities, which they may not otherwise be exposed, by introducing them to college-preparatory independent high schools. In addition, we equip students with the academic skills and support necessary to become viable candidates for these schools. This program is not designed for students who have their own means of accessing such schools.
  • Family Support: The Steppingstone Academy Hartford is a family commitment and requires active and involved parents/guardians. We are looking for families who will support their child throughout the 14-month component, from providing transportation to creating a quiet study space at home.
