Each student's application must be accompanied by two (2) letters of recommendation: English Teacher and Math Teacher Recommendation. We ask each person responsible for completing a recommendation to be thoughtful, precise, and most importantly honest! A recommendation that states that the students is the best math student you've ever had but has received a A- in your class and a 4 on the CMT might not be entirely accurate. If a student has character issues do not "sugar coat" it to not hurt the student's chance of acceptance, it will only come back to harm the integrity of your future recommendations and that of the Hartford Youth Scholars Foundation. We ask that you be specific because a generic recommendation does not help a school to understand the academic strengths and weaknesses of a students. Please comment as much as possible on the students academic ability, achievement, and aptitude. A recommendation that makes no reference to a student's academic ability from a subject teacher will imply that the student is not strong academically if you can't think of sufficient words and comments to describe the student.
Recommendations and all supporting materials from a students school are reqired to fully review an application! Please help us by mailing it directly to our address, if possible. Contact Kameyia Van Allen (860-297-5123 - leave a message if necessary) if you have any questions. Recommendations should be mailed back directly to HYSF in the envelope provided by the student/parent or your own envelope. Students and parents will never see the recommendation or be told what comments it may contain -- we respect your privacy so that you may be honest and forthcoming.
HYSF also requires that each student submit a copy of their transcript. The transcript should include the end of year report card from the previous school year and the student's most recent report card. Transcript should also include the most recent standardized testing scores ie CMT and/or Iowa Test.
